Proposals for mini-sessions and poster sessions are now being accepted for the KLA Academic and Special Library Sections and SLA Kentucky Chapter's 2012 Joint Spring Conference. The Conference will take place April 11-13, 2012 at the Lake Cumberland State Resort Park in Jamestown, KY.

The theme for this year's conference is "Become the Library They Need: Understanding User Expectations." Proposals addressing the theme in some fashion will receive preference from the committee. The mini-sessions will be 45 minutes long.

This year the JSC Planning Committee will accept poster session submissions. The Committee believes this addition to the program will provide an opportunity for all members, including those who may be new to the profession, to become involved by sharing ideas, interesting topics, research in progress, and new areas of technology in a more informal setting. The poster session will take place Thursday afternoon, April 12^th, 2012.

The keynote speakers will be Catherine Lavallee-Welch, Director of the University of South Florida Polytechnic University Library, and Janice Lachance, Chief Executive Officer of the Special Libraries Association.

All proposals must be submitted electronically.

The deadline to submit a proposal is October 15, 2011. Notification of accepted proposals will take place November 1, 2011. Please share this information with colleagues and other interested parties who may not otherwise see this announcement.

Georgetown College is a small, Christian, residential, co-educational liberal arts college that places emphasis on teaching excellence and encourages scholarly inquiry.

Position Available:

This full-time, non-tenure track, faculty position is responsible for coordinating and supporting the acquisition, maintenance and enhancement of electronic resources for the Library and providing general instructional and reference service as assigned. The Ensor Learning Resource Center is seeking a person with forward-looking ideas to work in a collaborative environment that sets high user-centered service standards.

Position Responsibilities:
The Electronic Resources Librarian will have leadership responsibility for managing electronic resource acquisitions, maintenance, access, and evaluation. The incumbent will participate in initiatives to enhance the discovery and use of library resources to meet user needs, and collaborate with library staff in the development of outreach and educational programming, in addition to monitoring trends and emerging issues in electronic resources. This librarian will play a public services role, including instruction, collection development, and research assistance. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Manage electronic resources, research and analyze electronic resource products and offers, set up product trials, and collaborate with librarian colleagues in product evaluation. Assist with the review of vendor license agreements and license compliance. Coordinate product changes and renewals and develop relationships with vendors in order to obtain optimal contractual terms. Work with vendors, publishers, and consortia in regard to orders, access, payment, and other performance matters.

2. Oversee system upgrades, routine operations, problem reporting and system reporting functions for Ex Libris Voyager. Work directly with IT concerning issues such as EZ proxy for databases.

3. Participate in initiatives to enhance the discovery and use of library resources to meet user needs. Collaborate with librarian colleagues to develop and present outreach and educational programming for faculty and students for optimal utilization of electronic and print resources, including specialized workshops, online tools, tutorials, and point-of-need support.

4. Evaluate and analyze usage of electronic resources. Prepare and maintain statistical reports as required by regional, consortia and federal organizations and agencies.

5. Monitor trends and maintain currency in emerging information technologies that support student learning and participate in initiatives to enhance the discovery and use of library resources to meet user needs.

6. Provide face-to-face and virtual reference service during regularly scheduled research assistance desk assignments.

7. Take part in the Library's collection development process as a liaison for assigned academic departments for print and non-print materials.

8. Participate in college and professional activities that meet the library’s criteria for promotion and evaluation.

Required Qualifications:

= MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited school received by date of hire;
= familiarity with standards for access and use of electronic resources and emerging technologies;
= ability to work collaboratively in a team environment;
= excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills;

Preferred Qualifications:

=Knowledge of licensed electronic resources in a library environment

=1-2 years of library experience

=Knowledge of academic librarianship and library instruction

=Current skill in the use of Internet-based general reference sources

=Familiarity in providing reference services in person and by phone, chat, and e-mail.

WKU libraries announces partnership with world's largest library cooperative

Western Kentucky University (WKU) Libraries announces its affiliation with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Research Library Partnership. The Research Library Partnership is an influential global collaborative of research libraries, museums, and archives that work with a sophisticated technical capacity, highly skilled on-staff experts and external consultants to achieve significant, innovative and collective action for the benefit of scholars and researchers everywhere.

According to Connie Foster, Interim Dean for WKU Libraries, the Partnership is supported by a large team of experts including information scientists, librarians, archivists, web developers, programmers, and analysts. “Through this new allliance, we will have leading-edge, peer-based opportunities to participate in transnational research collaboratives, to access multifaceted technology, and to explore challenges facing research libraries across the globe,” said Foster.

WKU students receive first semiannual library research awards

Western Kentucky University students Andrew Alvey from Warren County and Megan Stohner from Whitley County were awarded the first WKU Libraries and University Experience Undergraduate Research Awards on April 26 at WKU’s Cravens Library. Alvey was recognized for the best career essay and Stohner received an award for the best annotated bibliography. Both students received a $100 cash award along with a plaque honoring their achievement.

Alvey, a freshman from Bowling Green, was surprised to be selected as the top choice. “I was just concentrating on getting the assignment completed,” said Alvey, “I was very excited when I won.”

The purpose of the research awards is to recognize the important role of good library research in college academic success. Students from the University Experience classes are a great fit for this award, because they have a final project tied to their research instruction. “The award is a way for students to recognize the benefit of good research and to foster it throughout their entire career,” said Sara McCaslin, Library Skills Coordinator for University Experience.

Registration is now open for the Kentucky Library Association (KLA) Academic and Special Library Sections and Special Libraries Association (SLA) Kentucky Chapter's 2011 Joint Spring Conference. The Conference will take place April 13-15, 2011 at the Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg, KY.

Go here to register. Registration ends April 6, 2011. There will be NO on-site registrations.

Reservations for lodge rooms is available by calling 1-800-325-0142. Please mention the Kentucky Library Association in order to get the conference rate! You MUST call to make reservations, as the block of rooms is not available via their online system. Kentucky State Parks require a one-night deposit by credit card or check to hold the reservation.

Room reservations must by made by Monday March 14 to get the conference rate.

Any unsold rooms will be released to general reservation after that point!

The theme for this year's conference is "Kickin' It Up a Notch: Improving Our Professional Image."

National EDUCAUSE ELI Conference is Coming to Kentucky

The Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC) will be hosting a special online venue of the EDUCAUSE ELI Annual Conference, Educating in the Open: Philosophies, Innovations, and Stories at the CPE Offices February 14–16, 2011.

The Kentucky Strategic Agenda for Postsecondary Education (2011-2015) calls for an increase in academic productivity through program innovations including course redesign and alternative methods of program delivery to maximize success for all students. The ELI Annual Conference is full of quality content to help move your institution forward.

This webcast will encourage participants to explore the many meanings of "openness": open textbooks, open curriculum, open research, and open resources, and most importantly openness to new ideas. Today's technologies have transformed how we interact and engage with the world around us. New devices, services, and effective practices have increased access to information, while new policies and philosophies that explore openness have accelerated that change. The growth of social networks and virtual communities has transformed the learning environment into an interactive place to share and build content and community using collaborative systems. The webcast will address key questions:

What are the opportunities and the challenges associated with educating in the open?
How might our learners benefit from becoming producers and consumers in this environment?

KLA Lifetime Achievement Award:
The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to a Kentucky librarian who has contributed significantly to our profession through publications, presentations, and participation in professional library and/or information organizations. Nominees must be or have been a KLA member for 10 years, have a sustained record of service to the Association, and cannot be a current Executive Board member of the Association.

KLA William H. Natcher Award:
The William H. Natcher Award will be given to an individual, organization, or corporation that has made a significant philanthropic contribution to a Kentucky library. The contribution may be monetary or equipment.

KLA Carol J. Parris Mentoring Award:
The Carol J. Parris Mentoring Award recognizes an individual who has mentored one or more Kentucky Librarian or library worker. This mentoring could have occurred in an academic, personal, or work environment.

KLA James A. Nelson Library Advocacy Award:
The James A. Nelson Library Advocacy Award honors an individual who has been a strong advocate for a library or libraries on a local, regional, state or national level. The nominee may or may not be a librarian.

Academic Section representation for KLA standing committees

I'd like to thank all of you who volunteered to serve on Academic Library Section committees this year. I had overwhelming response from the membership, and for that I'm very grateful!

The KLA Blue Book calls for one member from each section to serve on a selection of KLA standing committees. I am writing today to ask you to consider representing the ALS on several of these KLA committees. Academic section delegates are needed for the following KLA committees:

• Fundraising
• Member Services (including the Intellectual Freedom Subcommittee and the Membership Subcommittee)
• Recruitment, Mentoring and Diversity
• Scholarship and Minority Students
• Strategic Planning and Organizational Review

The charges and duties of these committees can be found in the KLA Blue Book beginning with section 30.

It's almost here!

This year's Joint Spring Conference of the KLA Academic Section, the KLA Special Section, and the Kentucky Chapter of SLA will be held April 28-30, 2010 at the General Butler State Resort Park in Carrollton, KY; registration is now open.

The conference brochure and registration form are available for download; ALS members will be receiving paper brochures and registration forms in the mail shortly. Online registration/payment is also available here; a $3.00 service charge will be assessed when registering online and paying by credit card.

We have a great program again this year; we hope to see everyone in April!

Coming Soon: Committee Assignments!

First, I'd like to thank everyone who submitted the committee selection form. The response was tremendous! I was afraid I'd be be reduced to offering bribes at this point, but some of the committees are actually going to be very well-populated. Most everyone will serve on their first-choice committee. Going on the assumption that most of you are fulfilling promotion and tenure requirements by serving on these committees, if you indicated that you were willing to serve, I included you on each committee you selected. (For those of you who volunteered for more committees than you bargained for, please contact me and we can rearrange.)

In the next couple of days I'll be sending emails to the members of each committee, along with a copy of the committee's charge. This way everyone on a committee will have the contact information of the other members, and everyone will know not only what the committee should be doing, but also the estimated time frame for carrying out the duties of the committee. The committee chairs will then be responsible for communicating with the group, setting up meeting times and agendas.

If so, you are being invited to participate in a brief survey.

The purpose of this national study is to determine the experience of early-career librarians with professional associations. Specifically, are you attending conferences and meetings, serving on professional committees, participating in formal mentoring programs, and ultimately finding the kinds of opportunities you expected as you began your career? Boards Approve Recommendation For NELINET To Join Lyrasis

The Boards of Directors of NELINET and Lyrasis approved a resolution to recommend that NELINET join Lyrasis. Together, Lyrasis and NELINET will comprise the largest membership collaborative of its kind serving more than 4,500 libraries and cultural heritage institutions in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Southeastern United States.

If approved by the NELINET membership, the effective date of the merger will be Fall 2009.

SLA is a terrific organization for specialized subject information and is known for its excellent networking opportunities. Now SLA will also offer more programming and counterpart discussions of interest to academic librarians from all subject disciplines. SLA membership includes one division affiliation and one chapter affiliation at no additional cost (incidentally, the Kentucky Chapter is a very active and fun chapter).

The Academic Division is in the early formation stages, and we need your input to make this division the best it can be in serving the needs of academic members of SLA. We will have a round table session at the Annual Conference in Washington D.C. to solicit your input. If you aren't going to the conference but have ideas for the division, send them to jrfoster@tamu.edu. We'll take them with us to the conference and add them to the discussion.

View and Comment on ALS Joint Spring Conference Planning Guide

A majority of ALS members present voted at its fall KLA conference business meeting, held on October 2, to “Table” further discussion on and consideration of the draft Joint Spring Conference Planning Guide.

Background points of information:
1) The guide was developed by the 2008 ALS and SLS chairs, and SLA KY Chapter President and intended for use and reference by future Joint Spring Conference planners;
2) The policies and procedures were included to formalize the conference planning process and to provide the conference partner organizations with a formal agreement;
3) Both SLS and KY Chapter Executive Boards have approved the policies and procedures/planning guide;
4) ALS Executive Committee found the proposed “equal shares of conference proceeds” plan (page 1 of the document under the heading of “Conference Finances”) to be “unacceptable” and would not sign off on the document until this provision was revised.

Since few members outside of the ALS Executive Committee have had the opportunity to review the planning guide draft, particularly the proposed policies and procedures section, please see the link below for the latest draft , for ALS members’ review and comments.

Calling all Instruction Librarians!

The IS Mentoring Program is happy to announce its debut! The program is designed to contribute to the professional development of academic librarians interested in information literacy instruction and improving teaching skills by pairing librarians experienced in teaching with librarians new to instruction or to the Instruction Section OR by pairing librarians just looking to share ideas. The program creates a forum for learning opportunities, networking, and the exchange of ideas between paired mentors and mentees.

As this is the inaugural year for the program, the committee seeks ACRL/IS members for participation as either a mentor or mentee. Participation is primarily virtual, though there will be opportunities to meet in person at ALA Annual and midwinter conferences. Mentoring pairs will be matched after the Annual conference this summer. Deadline for applications is June 20, 2008.
Participants must be ACRL/IS members.

2. Legislative advocates sought
ACRL is looking to expand our group of legislative advocates and invites you to join. 3. ACRL/ LAMA registration deadline approaching
April 21 is the registration deadline for the ACRL/LAMA Joint Spring Virtual Institute, "Leading from the Middle: Managing in All Directions.” The Institute, offered by ACRL and the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), will be held April 29-30, 2008.

The Institute will feature live, interactive webcasts and asynchronous online poster sessions, allowing for convenient scheduling and flexibility. Programs will address issues of management and leadership, including developing library professionals, inspiring change, interim appointments, library 2.0 transformation, innovation and more. All institute programs will be archived for viewing on-demand after the institute. ACRL invites applicants to serve as ALA representatives to IFLA standing committees for the 2009 – 2013 term. There is currently one vacancy each in the following IFLA Standing Committees:

University Libraries and other General Research Libraries

Murder Mystery Volunteers needed at KLA Spring Conference

At the Thursday evening ice cream social in the park’s Blair Room facility, we will be holding a murder mystery party entitled, Honky Tonk Homicide. We need eight (8) brave souls to play character roles as possible suspects. The eight suspects or “Persons of Interest” are as follows: (NOTE: Descriptions were taken directly from the party guide Character Booklet)

#1 – Sheriff Sissy Wesson: The sexy, yet fierce and respected, sheriff of Cactus, Texas.

#2 – Rowdy Lawless: A bad boy with a short temper and a love for his bike.

#3 – Crystalline Daniels: The young, beautiful and promiscuous barmaid.

#4 – Reverend Jim Bob Eternity: The town’s beloved evangelist.

#5 – Mary Kay Eternity: The preacher’s wife, struggling for her own identity.

#6 – Dusty Diamond: The Karaoke Night host at Bubba’s Bar with big dreams of Country Western stardom.

#7 – Twyla Fleetwood: Proud owner of the Cactus Court Trailer Park and of her own personal nuclear holocaust bunker.

#8 – Carney Folk: An angry and sleazy carnival worker, passing through town.

Suspects will be questioned by the sheriff, as well as by “Investigative Teams” made up of audience members in the quest to find out who dun’it. All suspects, including Sheriff Wesson will receive a Character Booklet in advance of April 24 with tips on costuming and dialogue.

CHICAGO - The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is
pleased to announce ACRL OnPoint, a new live chat series. Each informal
monthly chat session provides the opportunity to connect with colleagues
and experts to discuss an issue of the day in academic and research
librarianship.

All ACRL OnPoint chats are free and open to the public. Sessions are
unmoderated, 30-45 minutes in length and take place in a Meebo chat
room. All chat sessions begin at 1pm CDT. While no registration is
necessary to participate, ACRL recommends creating a quick and easy
Meebo account for the best experience while participating in ACRL

Henry Jenkins has published extensively on various aspects of media and popular culture, including Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, Fans, Bloggers and Gamers: Exploring Participatory Culture, and From Barbie to Mortal Kombat: Gender and Computer Games. He writes regularly about media and cultural change at his blog, henryjenkins.org. Henry is one of the principal investigators for The Education Arcade, a consortium of educators and business leaders working to promote the educational use of computer and video games and of the Knight Center for Future Civic Media, a joint effort with the MIT Media Lab to use new media to enhance how people live in local communities. He is one of the principle investigators for GAMBIT, a lab focused on promoting experimentation through game design, and of Project nml, a MacArthur Foundation funded project that develops curricular materials focused on promoting the social skills and cultural competencies needed to become a full participant in the new media era.

The forum was held on January 13, 2008 in Philadelphia and featured panelists Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe and Scott Walter of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Michelle L. Zafron from the University at Buffalo.

3. New "Leading Change" Webcast
How can we better understand the effects of change on our organizations and on the people in them? In a new e-learning Webcast “Leading Change,” ACRL content strategist Kathryn Deiss provides several models which can serve as lenses through which to view change. Deiss has written and presented extensively on the subjects of leadership, innovation, coaching and mentoring, planning, organizational learning, and organizational culture.

3. Help ACRL make 2009 its greenest year
The ACRL Green Conference Committee is a new component committee of the National Conference Coordinating Committee. Its charge is to reduce the environmental impact of the 2009 National Conference in Seattle WA, to educate and inform participants about the environmental costs of attending the conference, and to set precedent for greener conferences in the future for ACRL and ALA.

Please help the Green Conference Committee by completing a brief survey about ways to "green" the conference. Courtney earned her Master of Library Science degree, as well as a BA in

Our continuing education begins with the Pre-Conference speaker, Professor Louis Manchise (Northern Kentucky University). His presentation, Preparing, Doing, and Enjoying Negotiating, will focus on the important preparation step for negotiating anything.
We also have an impressive lineup of featured speakers and presenters. George Needham (OCLC) will be our Opening Session speaker on Thursday morning. His presentation, To See Ourselves as Others See Us, will address the findings of three landmark reports on the ways in which librarians and the public perceive, use, and evaluate information.

Our Closing Session, Five Servant/Leaders Who Changed the World, by Dr. Michael Colegrove (University of the Cumberlands), will focus on the characteristics of five servant/leaders who had a major impact on today’s world. We will also have an author presentation at lunch on Thursday by Richard Taylor (Kentucky State University).

ACRL seeks presentations for 2009 professional development programs

ACRL invites proposal submissions for a half-day or full-day professional development programs to be held prior to the 2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting or the 2009 ALA Annual Conference. Submissions will be accepted through April 7, 2008.

FORMAT

Professional development programs should allow participants to develop skills related to a specific topic and should focus on interactive learning through a variety of presentation styles. Programs that offer practical tips and cutting-edge techniques are especially encouraged. Proposals should explicitly outline activities that will be incorporated during the session to enable attendees to achieve the session’s learning outcomes. Programs can either be half-day or full-day sessions.

PRESENTATION DATES

2009 ALA Midwinter Meeting. ACRL workshops will be held on Friday, January 23, 2009, in Denver.

2009 ALA Annual Conference. ACRL preconferences will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009, in Chicago.

3. Scholarships available for the 2008 ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute
ACRL is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships to support participation at the 2008 ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute, which will be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, August 3-8, 2008. In support of ACRL's commitment to librarians serving diverse communities, these two scholarships are for individuals currently working in Historically Black Colleges and Universities; Tribal Colleges or Universities; or Hispanic Serving Institutions. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition to the Institute ($2,300 value).

The ACRL/Harvard Leadership Institute is designed for directors of libraries and those who report directly to them in positions such as associate university librarian or assistant library dean. This 1.5-hour Webcast explores the role of the academic librarian in combating student plagiarism and the "culture of copy" that our students inhabit. Lynn Lampert, coordinator of information literacy and instruction at California State University-Northridge, will lead the Webcast. She has specialized in the area of information literacy instruction since she began her professional career as an academic librarian in 1998.

Without good communications skills a librarian will have a difficult
time being a good reference librarian. However, without solid competence
in reference skills and knowledge, a librarian is not a librarian. This
reference expertise is why information seekers-all potential and current
library users-will choose to use virtual reference services instead of
just Googling on their own. Reference competencies involve searching,
critical thinking, and information organization skills, as well as
knowledge of specific reference sources and information-finding tools.
Competent reference librarians are aware of the publication processes,
both print and electronic, and the policies, procedures, organization,
and legal environment of their specific library or library organization.
In this workshop participants will engage in learning activities,
supported by readings as well as lecture and discussion to maintain and
build on the reference competencies required by effective virtual
reference librarians.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Research Planning and Review Committee is charged with collecting member feedback each year on the “Assumptions About the Relevant Future for Research and Academic Librarians and Libraries” This feedback helps to inform annual discussions by the Board of Directors on the status of the Strategic Plan and on any initiatives or programs that might be pursued by the Association in the coming year. Beginning this year, we are encouraging broad feedback from ACRL members on the “Assumptions” through the use of a Web-based survey instrument available at https://marvin.foresightint.com/surveys/Tier1Survey/ACRL/231.

This survey instrument will be available for use by ACRL members immediately following the conclusion of the ALA Midwinter meeting. In completing the survey, we ask that respondents keep the following questions in mind:

• How would you rank the importance of each of the established “Assumptions” in terms of its being a priority for ACRL attention in the coming year (2009)?

• Are there established “Assumptions” that remain relevant, but require substantial revision in light of changes to the academic and research library environment over the past 5 years?

• Are there established “Assumptions” that are no longer relevant to the future of academic and research libraries that should be dropped from future surveys?

• How would you rank the importance of each of the “Emergent Issues” identified in the 2007 Environmental Scan in terms of its being a priority for ACRL attention in the coming year (2009)?

• Are there any “Emergent Issues” that have become so significant that they should be included as part of the “Assumptions” for future surveys?

Finally, the instrument will provide opportunities for members to identify additional “emergent issues” not addressed in either the “Assumptions” document or in the 2007 Environmental Scan.

All ACRL members are encouraged to complete the survey. The survey will remain online and available to respondents until March 30, 2008.

The Research Planning and Review Committee will also sponsor a focus group discussion of the “Assumptions” at the ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim. Please watch for further information as the date draws closer.

Examine why plagiarism poses problems for higher education professionals including academic librarians, why use of discipline-based approaches helps combat plagiarism effectively, how to design effective information literacy session assignments to help students understand how they can avoid plagiarism, and more.

Lynn Lampert, coordinator of information literacy and instruction at California State University-Northridge will lead the webcast. She has specialized in the area of information literacy instruction since she began her professional career as an academic librarian in 1998.

1. ACRL issues 2007 environmental scan; invites reaction
The 2007 environmental scan by the Research Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries (available at http://www.acrl.org/ala/acrl/acrlpubs/whitepapers/Environmental_Scan_2.pdf) explores the current atmosphere in the world of academic and research libraries. It also considers trends that will define the future of academic and research librarianship and the research environment. The document builds on earlier ACRL reports, identifying several emerging issues that will increasingly impact the work of academic and research libraries and librarians.

Please share your thoughts and reactions to the issues identified in the 2007 environmental scan in an open discussion during the 2008 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, at Loews Philadelphia in room Congress C.

2. New ACRL publications

ACRL Publications is pleased to announce two new titles. Library 2.0 Initiatives in Academic Libraries, edited by Laura B. Cohen, is ACRL’s first hybrid publication. The title combines a print volume of twelve case studies with a wiki (http://www.acrl.ala.org/L2Initiatives) where the cases will be updated over the next two years. Authors describe the use of such tools as blogs, wikis, podcasts, IM, RSS, XML, Web services, mashups, and social networking to illustrate their efforts to forge new models of scholarly communication in academic environments.

Information Literacy Programs in the Digital Age: Educating College and University Students Online edited by Alice Daugherty and Michael F. Russo will also be published in time for ALA Midwinter 2008. This volume presents significant and innovative online instruction programs, describing the development, implementation, and assessment of each of these. This book is a resource for institutions currently teaching information literacy online, and a guide to those considering doing so.

Virtual reference service requires all of the same professional communications skills and knowledge as face-to-face reference service. The challenge is to apply, practice, imagine, and understand how to communicate professionally within the technology context and using good reference skills and knowledge. In this course, participants will engage in learning activities, supported by readings as well as lecture and discussion to practice and expand the communications competencies required by effective virtual reference librarians.

For very little investment in staff hours and training you can reap tremendous benefits by connecting with the users of your library website and web based applications through usability testing. This three-week course is designed for the librarian or library IT staff person who is interested in setting up a usability program but doesn’t know where to begin.

ACRL e-learning courses are primarily asynchronous seminars, allowing participants to work through course material at times convenient to them throughout the three week scheduled course time. Participants may also choose to schedule online chat time with the teacher, as they feel necessary. Specific material and learning activities will be covered during each week of the course. Threaded discussion forums are available for use in learning activities and other course-related conversations.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR KLA/KSMA, SELA, ARL National Diversity in Libraries Conference

Proposals are being accepted for the 2008 KLA/KSMA conference SPECTRUM OF THE FUTURE. This is a joint conference with the Southeastern Library Association and the Association of Research Libraries National Diversity in Libraries Conference. All proposals must be submitted electronically.

SPARC-ACRL Forum to focus on student engagement

CHICAGO – The 16th SPARC-ACRL Forum, “Working with the Facebook Generation: Engaging Student Views on Access to Scholarship,” will be held at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia on January 12. Co-sponsored by SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries), the semiannual forum focuses on emerging issues in scholarly communication.

Appreciating, if not understanding, student perspectives on information sharing and access to research will advance library outreach programs. Librarians and students have the power to build valuable bridges of collaboration and guide the larger academic community to reshape scholarly communication.

Tech-savvy students, who live and breathe information sharing, are critical to changing the way scholarly communication is conducted. Not bound by traditional modes of research exchange, students are using all the technologies at their disposal to engage in scholarly discourse – including blogs, wikis and tagging tools. What will they do next? How do they view the future of scholarly exchange? At the next SPARC-ACRL Forum, graduate students from an array of disciplines, institutions and engaged perspectives will share their approaches to scholarly communication issues. Joined by librarians whose scholarly communication programs have explicit student-focused components, they will explore the importance of outreach and the potential impact of students as current and future key stakeholders. ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication Provides Free Online Resources

The ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication has engaged hundreds
of librarians in developing campus outreach programs around scholarly
communication issues. To continue supporting this community and other
libraries planning outreach programs, ARL's newest study Scholarly
Communication Education Initiatives, SPEC Kit 299, is now freely
available online through the FAIR (Freely Accessible Institute
Resources) Web site at http://www.arl.org/sc/institute/instres.shtml.

In addition to a PDF of the complete report, the Web site offers a PDF
of the table of contents and executive summary, and a supplementary page
listing the Web-based resources included in the SPEC Kit with active
links. The SPEC Kit can also be purchased in print form; visit
http://www.arl.org/resources/pubs/spec/ for information.

Written by alumni of the ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication,
Kathleen A. Newman, Deborah D. Blecic, and Kimberly L. Armstrong, the
study provides a survey of outreach activities among ARL member
libraries and gathers examples of documentation from respondents in the
form of proposals for education initiatives, scholarly communication and
copyright Web pages, job descriptions, and education materials.

The FAIR Web site offers other valuable resources for those planning and
conducting scholarly communication outreach programs on their campuses,
such as two particularly popular tools created for the Institute for use
under a Creative Commons Share Alike License. The posted "Environmental
Scan Exercise" is used by participants in the three-day Institute events
to assess their campus' climate, past outreach activities, and readiness
for program development prior to their arrival at the meeting. Institute
faculty member Lee Van Orsdel has created an "Opportunity Assessment
Instrument" that provides a framework for collecting data on academic
departments. In addition to using the instrument to learn about
individual departments, some Institute alumni are using a customized
version of this tool for a cross-campus survey.

While the FAIR Web site does not publish all of the resources used
during the Institute's planning events, it provides a place for
Institute faculty and alumni to share selected outreach tools that they
develop.

ACRL is offering 85 scholarships worth more than $45,000 to support participation in the conference for librarians, students, and support staff. There are five scholarship categories and all applications must be submitted online and received by December 1, 2006. See www.acrl.org/baltimore (click on "Scholarships") for more details. Scholarships support attendance at the ACRL 13th National Conference and most provide an additional travel stipend. Scholarships for the ACRL Virtual Conference are also available and provide unique opportunities for collaboration, learning, and networking online.

2. ACRL invites applicants for IIL Immersion '07 Program - deadline to apply December 1, 2006
ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy (IIL) invites you to apply for its first international Immersion program, which will be held at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, August 5-10, 2007. Immersion '07 will be four-and-one-half days of intensive training and education for academic librarians. Immersion '07 will provide you with the intellectual tools and practical techniques to help you build or enhance your instruction programs. A faculty of nationally recognized librarians will offer the program. Program sessions fall into two separate tracks:
TEACHER TRACK. This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. Curriculum includes classroom techniques, learning theory, leadership, and assessment framed in the context of information literacy.

PROGRAM TRACK. This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution.

Acceptance to the Immersion Program is competitive; participation is limited to 90 individuals to ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active participation. C&RL News wants to hear from you about these tools and how they help you succeed in your work. --Assessment of Academic Library Effectiveness: Using ACRL Standards for Continuous EvaluationLearn about the new ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education as a framework for assessing all academic libraries. During this full-day workshop, discover how to use commonly-collected information: statistics for internal and peer comparison of inputs and outputs, as well as user satisfaction and service quality data for evaluating the academic library. A hands-own activity session will involve all attendees in a small group learning exercise to apply some of the principles introduced at the workshop.

--Creating the One Shot Library Workshop Step-by-StepThis workshop will provide an overview and hands-on practice of a well tested process for designing one-shot library workshops. The process, covered in the book by the presenter called Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop: A Step-by-Step Guide (ALA Editions), will help you build effective and interesting sessions that ensure learning objectives are being met. The day-long workshop will follow the basic instructional design cycle: assessment, development, design, implementation, and evaluation that is broken down into 20 steps. Find out how to employ specific techniques to avoid information overload and increase learning.

--Managing the Changing Research Models in the HumanitiesIn an academic setting where many undergraduates never learned the models for conducting research with print materials, and many graduate students and faculty struggle with evolving electronic interfaces, those transmitting research skills need new metaphors, communication techniques and, perhaps, objectives. This full-day workshop will provide an overview of the current environment in humanities research, focusing on library services and communication initiatives. Presentations will be shared at the Cyber Zed Shed during the ACRL 13th National Conference, which will be held in Baltimore, March 29 - April 1, 2007. Cyber Zed Shed presentations will be held throughout the day on Saturday, March 31, 2007, and will be located on the exhibit floor at the Baltimore Convention Center. Proposals must be submitted by Friday, December 8.

FORMAT
Cyber Zed Shed presentations are 20-minutes in length, with fifteen minutes to present a demonstration, and five additional minutes for audience Q&A. Presentations should document technology-related innovations in academic and research libraries.

4. Applications/nominations invited for PIL editor
ACRL is accepting applications for the position of editor of ACRL Publications in Librarianship (PIL), a series of monographic and edited volumes that reports research and scholarly thinking in academic and research librarianship. The editor is appointed for a non-renewable five-year term.Applicants must be a member of the American Library Association (ALA) and ACRL. Candidates should have experience in research and writing, the ability to evaluate submissions and edit manuscripts, skills in working with authors and an understanding of publishing. The editor is expected to chair two editorial board meetings a year at the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference.

Together with a four- to seven-member editorial board, the editor is charged with encouraging research and writing that is appropriate for the series, identifying topics and authors for new books, refereeing submissions and editing manuscripts for publication. The current editorial board is developing a number of promising proposals, and the new editor will oversee some of these to publication as well as develop others.

A number of noteworthy works has been produced for the series ranging from single-authored monographs to edited collections. Recent publications include: Centers for Learning: Writing Centers and Academic Libraries in Collaboration, Publications in Librarianship no. 58, James K. Elmborg and Sheril Hook (2005); Colleges, Code, and Copyright: The Impact of Digital Networks and Technological Controls on Copyright and the Dissemination of Information in Higher Education, Publications in Librarianship no. 57, Center for Intellectual Property and Copyright (2005); The Changing Academic Library: Operations, Cultures, Environments, Publications in Librarianship, no. 56, John M. Budd (2005).

The new editor will serve on a volunteer basis and succeed Charles A. (Tony) Schwartz, whose term ends in July 2008. Interviews of candidates will take place at the 2007 Midwinter Meeting and, following approval by the ACRL Publications Committee and ACRL Board, the successful candidate will serve as associate editor from July 2007 to July 2008, before assuming the editorship.

ACRL is offering 85 scholarships worth more than $45,000 to support participation in the conference for librarians, students and support staff. ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy (IIL) invites you to apply for its first international Immersion program which will be held at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, August 5-10, 2007. Immersion '07 will be four-and-one-half days of intensive training and education for academic librarians. Immersion ’07 will provide you with the intellectual tools and practical techniques to help you build or enhance your instruction programs. A faculty of nationally recognized librarians will offer the program. Program sessions fall into two separate tracks:

TEACHER TRACK. This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. Curriculum includes classroom techniques, learning theory, leadership, and assessment framed in the context of information literacy.

PROGRAM TRACK. This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution. Some funding for editorial assistance and travel to relevant conferences is available, and there is a small honorarium for the editor.

5. ACRL 2005 Academic Library Trends and Statistics now available
ACRL has published the 2005 Academic Library Trends and Statistics series, available both online and in print. This survey includes comprehensive data from 1,100 academic libraries in all Carnegie classifications. It covers collections, expenditures, electronic expenditures, personnel and public services (including Ph.D.s granted, number of faculty, undergraduate and graduate enrollment).

The 2005 survey also measures the use of electronic resources by academic libraries. The data cover electronic journals, reference sources, books, networked resources and services, and digitization activities.

"These data are especially useful for libraries seeking to benchmark their effectiveness in relation to their peer institutions as recommended in the ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education," said Shawn P. Calhoun, chair of the ACRL Statistics Committee.

The three-volume survey is arranged by Carnegie classification including one volume with Associate of Arts degree-granting institutions, one with those in the combined Carnegie classifications of Master's Colleges and Universities, and Baccalaureate Colleges, and one with Research/Doctoral-granting institutions. The data also are available in an electronic version, with capabilities for searching and comparing select criteria. 1. Strategic Initiative Action Plans Proposed for FY 2008
In mid-September, the ACRL Board of Directors considered 24 strategic initiative action plan proposals submitted by ACRL units. The units requested funding for activities including scholarships, outreach to other higher education and discipline-specific organizations, and concept development for an "Information Literacy Roadshow." The Board accepted 17 of the plans, and directed staff to include nearly $25,000 in the draft FY 2008 ACRL budget to support the activities. The ACRL Board notified all units as to the status of their proposed plans by the end of September.

The Action Plan is a tool to assist ACRL units and leaders to articulate actions that will contribute to the implementation of the strategic plan in the next fiscal year. Annually, the action plan process ties together the strategic plan with the fall development of the ACRL budget. This process allows the Board to consider allocations in the next budget cycle for those action plans that require funding.

2. Higher Education Futures Report Now Available
CHICAGO – The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), as a member of the Council of Higher Education Management Associations (CHEMA), recently participated in a survey conducted by CHEMA and the EDUCAUSE Center for Applied research (ECAR).CHEMA, an informal, voluntary assembly of 30 management-oriented higher education associations in the United States and Canada, periodically sponsors broad studies and analyses that are of interest to the memberships and it associations. Through this study, CHEMA hoped to examine how higher education will change over the next ten years, identify what drives change, and understand how to prepare and manage change to shape the future of higher education. The project was jointly sponsored by 22 CHEMA member associations, including ACRL. 1. Registration is now open for ACRL's Fall Virtual Institute
Registration is now open for the ACRL Fall Virtual Institute, "The User at the Center." The institute, which will be held completely online, will be offered on November 9, 2006, and will focus on how libraries can use technologies and practice to put the user at the center of the information enterprise on campus. Maximize your ability to meet your mission on your campus by discovering new tools and new ways of thinking about users and their behaviors. Programs include a framing featured speaker, Jeffrey Trzeciak, University Librarian at McMaster University (Canada), as well as concurrent sessions focusing on topics varying from vlogging to wikis to user perceptions. 2. ACRL invites applicants for IIL Immersion ’07 Program - deadline to apply December 1, 2006
ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy (IIL) invites you to apply for its first international Immersion program which will be held at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, August 5-10, 2007. Immersion '07 will be four-and-one-half days of intensive training and education for academic librarians. Immersion ’07 will provide you with the intellectual tools and practical techniques to help you build or enhance your instruction programs. A faculty of nationally recognized librarians will offer the program. Program sessions fall into two separate tracks:

TEACHER TRACK. This track focuses on individual development for those who are interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending their individual instruction skills. Curriculum includes classroom techniques, learning theory, leadership, and assessment framed in the context of information literacy.

PROGRAM TRACK. This track focuses on developing, integrating, and managing institutional and programmatic information literacy programs. Participants selected for the Program Track will develop individual case studies in advance of the Immersion program. Immersion participants will be expected to develop the case studies into an action plan for implementation at the home institution.

Acceptance to the Immersion Program is competitive; participation is limited to 90 individuals to ensure an environment that fosters group interaction and active participation. ACRL is offering three professional development workshops in conjunction with the 2007 American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, Washington. * Assessment of Academic Library Effectiveness: Using ACRL Standards for Continuous Evaluation
Learn about the new ACRL Standards for Libraries in Higher Education as a framework for assessing all academic libraries. Discover how to use commonly-collected information: statistics for internal and peer comparison of inputs and outputs, as well as user satisfaction and service quality data for evaluating the academic library. A hands-on activity session will involve all attendees in a small group learning exercise to apply some of the principles introduced at the workshop.

* Creating the One Shot Library Workshop Step-by-Step
This workshop will provide an overview and hands-on practice of a well tested process for designing one-shot library workshops. The process, covered in the book by the presenter called Creating the One-Shot Library Workshop: A Step-by-Step Guide (ALA Editions), will help you build effective and interesting sessions that ensure learning objectives are being met. Find out how to employ specific techniques to avoid information overload and increase learning.

*Managing the Changing Research Models in the Humanities
In an academic setting where many undergraduates never learned the models for conducting research with print materials, and many graduate students and faculty struggle with evolving electronic interfaces, those transmitting research skills need new metaphors, communication techniques and, perhaps, objectives. This full-day workshop will provide an overview of the current environment in humanities research, focusing on library services and communication initiatives. Explore the effects of classroom presentation techniques on educational outcomes and acquire communication techniques to promote library services to humanities constituencies.

4. Apply for the 2007 ACRL Best Practices in Marketing Academic and Research Libraries @ your library® Award!
This award will be presented at the 13th ACRL National Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, March 29-April 1, 2007. Sponsored by the ACRL Marketing Academic and Research Libraries Committee and funded by Springer, the award will be given to the academic/research library in each category (community college, college, and university) that demonstrates an outstanding best practices marketing program. Programs must have been in place for one year and selection will be based on the most complete documentation.

The New York Times Academic Librarian Awards

The New York Times has long been committed to supporting education and access to information, qualities that are so well exemplified by libraries. The Times is pleased this year to inaugurate The New York Times Academic Librarian Awards, which will honor three librarians who are currently working in university libraries.

The Times Librarian Award recognizes those librarians whose outstanding service has enriched their libraries, institutions and communities.

Eligibility Guidelines: Eligible nominees include any librarian with a Master’s degree in library science who is currently working in a college or university library in the United States.

Nominators must be current students, faculty or staff members of accredited colleges or universities within the United States. Nominations of librarians by their family members will not be considered. Nominators are encouraged to nominate librarians who consistently demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism, knowledge and public service in the execution of their duties.

ALA President Leslie Burger's new program will "enable 100 new librarians to get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership."

Emerging Leaders 2007 will select and train 100 new librarians beginning with a daylong session at the 2007 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle. Afterward, it will continue online for six months, culminating at the 2007 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. For more information

2. New JobLIST site combines online ads from C&RL News and American Libraries

Employers and job seekers in library and information science and technology now have a completely searchable and all-inclusive Web resource at their command with the official launch of JobLIST (www.joblist.ala.org ).

JobLIST allows job seekers to choose from a "quick search" or to select criteria from many categories for advanced searches. The site sorts job listings not only by library type, but also by date, state, institution name, salary range, and other parameters. In addition, job seekers can register free-of-charge to post their resumes on the site and recruiters will be able to search those resumes confidentially. Job seekers may also subscribe to an RSS feed that will pick up all new ads as they are posted or subscribe based on specific search criteria that they define.

New ACRL advocacy toolkit now available

CHICAGO - A new advocacy toolkit from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) is now online at http://www.ala.org/marketing. The toolkit will help librarians and library workers to develop their personal powers of persuasion to advance the agenda of the academic library.

This publication provides basic content on persuasion, techniques for persuading others, applications of persuasion techniques for libraries and recommended processes and examples for persuading others within higher education environments.

As part of her presidential focus over the past year, Camila Alire, ACRL past-president, commissioned a task force to develop a workshop and create a toolkit on grassroots advocacy. Julie Todaro, vice-president/president-elect of ACRL, wrote the toolkit and the Grassroots Advocacy Task Force developed the successful half-day workshop at ALA's 2006 Annual Conference in New Orleans.

"With an enhanced understanding of the dynamics of persuasion, academic and research librarians can more effectively advance student learning, increase organizational visibility, and positively influence decisions affecting the future," said Patricia Smith, executive director of the Texas Library Association.

The resulting toolkit builds on the work of ACRL Past-President Helen Spalding, whose work with the @ your academic library campaign served to highlight the importance of advocacy efforts at the local level. It provides many suggestions for starting a systematic advocacy campaign for libraries and campuses. One copy will be mailed to each ACRL member in August. Additional copies are available for sale online at http://www.ala.org/publications.

Google Introduces a Government Search Site

On June 15th Google announced Google U.S. Government Search ( at http://usgov.google.com). This site is designed to offer a single location for searching across U.S. government information, and for keeping up-to-date on government news. It includes U.S. federal, state, and local sites with domains such as .gov and .mil as well as select government sites with .com, .us, and .edu domains (e.g., .usps.com, .ca.us, and ndu.edu). It also includes news from other sites like WashingtonPost.com.

(Another interesting fact: as of this January, the government’s own search site, FirstGov.gov, is now powered by MSN Search and Vivísimo.)

Beehive and new Public Internet Channel

This site might be useful for anyone serving low-income students and/or ESL students. The Beehive at http://www.thebeehive.org/
is a online resource created by a nonprofit organization to help low-income people find basic information about education, child care, jobs, immigration issues, etc. It is is written at a 5th grade reading level, and that could be especially useful to persons new to this country who are just learning to speak basic English. It also can be translated directly to Spanish, and the interface can be customized to a particular state, if desired.

The same non-profit has also announced recently that is plans to to raise $20 million to start a new project called the Public Internet Channel.
