ACRL offering new Webcast on combating student plagiarism

ACRL is offering a new Webcast, "The Role of the Librarian in Combating Student Plagiarism." Registration is open!

This new one-hour Webcast from ACRL explores the role of the academic librarian in combating student plagiarism, the "culture of copy" that our students inhabit and why plagiarism poses problems for higher education professionals including academic librarians, why use of discipline based approaches helps combat plagiarism effectively, how to design effective information literacy session assignments to help students understand how they can avoid plagiarism, and more.

Lynn Lampert, coordinator of information literacy and instruction at California State University-Northridge will lead this Webcast, which is based on her half-day 2006 Midwinter ACRL preconference, "Combating the Culture of Copy: Information Literacy Interventions for Plagiarism."

OVGTSL 2006 Conference Registration Deadline

A reminder that registration for the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians 2006 Annual Conference is currently underway. Note the registration deadline is: April 28th.

This year's conference, "Crossroads to the Future," is being held May 10th-12th in downtown Bloomington, Indiana at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center. Featured speakers will be: Roxanne Sellberg, Assistant University Librarian for Technical Services at Northwestern University Library in Evanston, Illinois and Eric Lease Morgan, Head of the Digital Access and Information Architecture Department at the University Libraries of Notre Dame. Programming also includes concurrent tracks with 17 scheduled sessions covering various aspects of technical services.

1. Higher Learning Commission Annual Conference Report
ACRL was invited to co-sponsor a program track at the Higher Learning Commission's Annual Conference. The Higher Learning Commission is a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and their yearly conference attracts 3,500 administrators and faculty from more than 800 institutions. ACRL's programs tied into the conference theme "The Future-Focused Organization: 2016-Ready or Not?" by examining future-focused issues such as learning spaces, scholarly communication, and planning the library of the future. The following programs were presented by ACRL members from March 31-April 4, 2006:
* "Libraries Unbundled," by Wendy Pradt Lougee, University of Minnesota
* "Planning Student Centered Libraries in a High-Tech Environment," by Harold B. Shill, Penn State Harrisburg
* "Risky Business: The Future of Scholarly Communication," by Mary Case, University of Illinois at Chicago and Mary Ellen Davis, ACRL
* "Enriching the Academic Experience through Research-Based Learning," by Elizabeth A. Dupuis, University of California, Berkeley

ACRL offering Top Technology Trends Webcast, May 10

ACRL is offering a new Webcast, Top Technology Trends, May 10 at 11 a.m.
PDT (1:00 CDT, 2:00 EDT). In this one-hour Webcast, Roy Tennant, user
services architect for the California Digital Library (CDL), will
highlight key technological trends, demonstrate working examples of
these technologies, and discuss how libraries are beginning to use them
to provide useful collections and compelling user services.

At CDL, Tennant has been instrumental in the development and deployment
of the eScholarship Repository and the eScholarship Editions publishing
services. He manages the Metasearch Infrastructure Project and
participates in the Harvesting Infrastructure Project, as well as a
number of other CDL projects. Prior to his work at CDL, Roy was the
digital library project manager for the library at the University of
California, Berkeley. He developed and managed UC Berkeley's Digital
Library SunSITE (Software, Information and Technology Exchange),
sponsored by Sun Microsystems.

BCTC LRC hosts Art Exhibit/Reception: The Art of Enrique Gonzales
