Assistant Professor/Librarian at WKU-Owensboro



Western Kentucky University, Owensboro Regional Campus, is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Professor/Librarian in the Department of Library Public Services. This position is located on the Owensboro Campus. This is a ten-month, tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position begins on July 1, 2013.

WKU-Owensboro (WKU-O) enrolls approximately 1200 students and employs over 80 faculty and staff members. The WKU-O campus, approximately 70 miles from the main campus in Bowling Green, offers a wide variety of degree programs and serves the western Kentucky and southern Indiana area. With a population of 58,000, Owensboro sits on the south shore of the Ohio River and is located in Daviess County.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted, and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs. All tenure-eligible positions involve, in addition to regular job duties, assigned committee work and  research/publishing.


  • Supervise and manage the WKU-Owensboro Campus Library services, material, and personnel, including student assistants

  • Provide reference service, research instruction (primarily on using online databases), and library orientation to WKU-O faculty and students

  • Do collection development for the undergraduate and graduate programs offered at WKU-Owensboro and for assigned areas of the main campus library

  • Serve as liaison to main campus academic departments

  • Work with the Extended Library and Off-Campus Services Librarian to assure quality service to the WKU-O students


NOTE: This position requires regular, periodic travel between Owensboro and the main campus in Bowling Green.

Required Qualifications


  • ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science, plus a subject Master's, specialist, or other advanced degree

  • Prior library experience in a professional position

  • Recent experience with various instructional technologies and digital resources in a library setting

  • Experience providing reference services and instruction

  • Ability to meet the promotion and tenure criteria of the Department

Western Kentucky University seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor/ Electronic Resources Librarian in the Department of Library Technical Services. This is a ten month, tenure-eligible faculty position beginning on July 1, 2013 reporting to the Head, Department of Library Technical Services with collaborative report to the Head, Library Public Services. Responsibilities include: facilitate the selection, acquisition, maintenance, access and licensing of electronic resources. Develops policies and procedures for managing electronic resources and oversees licensing and compliance, tracking status, access and other technology issues. Prepares statistical reports on usage. Chairs the library-wide committee for electronic resources. Assists with institutional repository and other digital initiatives. Shared responsibilities for reference and instructional services. Performs other related duties as assigned. Research, service, and publication required for promotion and tenure.

Requirements: ALA accredited MLS degree. Experience with managing issues and processes associated with electronic resources. Familiarity with emerging information technologies, and web technologies. Ability to lead digital initiatives in collaboration with librarians, faculty, and administration. Strong organizational skills and the ability to respond efficiently to changing needs and priorities. Able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a timely manner.

temporary part-time position at Transylvania University Library



Transylvania Library is seeking a temporary, part-time reference librarian to aid students with their research and assist with supervision of library student workers. The individual selected will work between 15 and 30 hours per week in the afternoons and evenings and may include some weekends. The assignment will end on or before December 14.

Preference will be given to candidates who have a Masters in Library Science or a person pursuing their MLS degree.

This position will provide some excellent resume building experience to an individual who is just beginning in the career field.  It can also provide supplemental income to one with experience.

Berea College's Hutchins Library seeks an energetic, innovative, and collegial Coordinator of Information Literacy to lead a strong service-oriented team as they develop and implement programs to support student and faculty research.  This position provides leadership, vision, and oversight of the information literacy program and research services; oversees the transformation of these services based on assessment and implementation of new technologies; collaborates with the library faculty to implement and support information technologies; directly supervises two faculty positions and indirectly supervises approximately ten student assistants; and collaborates with other academic programs and centers to support student success initiatives. Many of the library's services support the information literacy program, and the Coordinator has a leadership role in designing and overseeing these services using information technology, instructional design, and high-impact practices - not just those for today, but also helping guide the entire Library successfully through an ever-changing landscape in the future. The Coordinator ensures that the Library is both high-tech and high-touch, welcoming for students and faculty members, and integrated into the curriculum.

As a member of the library faculty, the Coordinator serves as a liaison to academic programs, teaches information literacy sessions, works at the reference desk, provides research consultations, and serves on library and campus committees.  The Coordinator of Information Literacy reports to Director of Library Services. This is a continuing, non-tenure track, 11-month position with faculty rank and status. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate is required to have a Master's in Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution; a deep background in educational theory and technology; five years professional experience working with faculty members to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum; and demonstrated success in a leadership role. The successful candidate should also have a strong background in science, social sciences, or education; demonstrated success with information technology tools; experience in developing and assessing information literacy programs and in implementing new technologies; demonstrated knowledge of information technology, instructional design, and social media applications; excellent interpersonal communication, organization, and analytic skills; ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively with a diverse clientele of students, faculty, and library colleagues; ability to work independently and/or in a team-based environment.

Job duties: Responsible for operating the Learning Resource Center in the evening hours. General circulation duties; serial check-in; provide general and subject-specific library orientation individual or group instruction for evening faculty and students; locate materials and information for patrons in online catalog(s), databases and the Internet; answer reference and general questions; assist users with Microsoft software (Office 2010 components), process new materials; perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the librarian.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or minimum of two years of college required - library experience preferred - excellent public service and communication skills - working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office components, Internet and databases. Experience with TLC or other library software helpful.

Must be able to work Monday 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Tuesday - Thursday 4:30 - 9:40 pm, Friday 4:00 - 9:00pm (weekend hours may be available if desired).
